Restylane, a soft tissue filler injection substance, is a FDA approved bio-degradable material that is made of a natural substance. Restylane is the first non-animal compound that is composed of hyaluronic acid, which is already present in the human body and naturally provides volume to the skin and lubricates the joints. Due to the aging process, the amount of the hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin in the skin gradually decreases. This will result in volume loss, skin laxity, and deep facial static wrinkles. Since 1996, Restylane has been used to correct and supplement the declining amount of the skin’s hyaluronic acid and to restore volume into the skin’s soft tissue areas. Due to pre-existence of hyaluronic acid in the body, no pre-treatment allergy testing is required.

 
The amount and location of the injection depends on the patient’s desire. The most common areas are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), the nasolabial folds (from the root of nose to the angle of the mouth), and the lips. Other areas can also be treated.

 
The treatment should last about 30-45 minutes. The results can be visualized immediately. Despite all the best efforts, some patients may experience incomplete results. In these circumstances additional re-treatments may be required. Very superficial and very deep wrinkles are hard to correct with Restylane.

 
Restylane does not affect or alter the muscle function and is not a replacement for Botox in the treatment of dynamic wrinkles. In actuality the two products are complementary and their simultaneous use results in a more smooth, relaxed and younger appearance. Additional Laser and IPL treatments will significantly enhance the youthful appearance of the skin and face.
